Insufficient Scan Quality When Scanning Metal Abutments with 3Shape Lab Scanners

09/11/2023

Common Issues with Scan Quality

When scanning produced abutments, such as dies, the scan quality may sometimes be low. The scan surface may appear bumpy or uneven, lack smoothness, or contain visible holes.

Affected scanner models and software versions: Any model, any version.

Possible cause: The scanned object is shiny or glossy, causing reflections during scanning.

Solution: To achieve a proper scan result, all reflective parts, such as metal and glossy plastic, should be sprayed with scan spray. Scan spray may also be required for objects with translucent parts or very contrasting colors.

Important Guidelines

Step 1: Thoroughly spray the object to cover all reflective parts.

Step 2: Make sure the scan spray layer is smooth and even. The scan spray creates an additional layer on top of the object surface and is scanned together with the object.

The following examples show insufficient spraying that may still result in an uneven scan surface.
