TRIOS 6 Hyperspectral imaging enablement in EU & EEA

TRIOS 6 Hyperspectral imaging enablement in EU & EEA

06/11/2025

We are pleased to announce that TRIOS 6 has received necessary certification to enable the full hyperspectral imaging package in the EU and EEA markets. Starting January 12, 2026 hyperspectral imaging will be available for all eligible TRIOS 6 scanners.

What is hyperspectral imaging?

Hyperspectral imaging simultaneously combines white, fluorescent, and near-infrared light data in one scan, and as such generates a wealth of data enabling excellent treatment outcomes for your patients.

Read further to learn what steps you need to take to get access to hyperspectral imaging.

TRIOS 6 scanners purchased before January 12, 2026

To get access to the full hyperspectral imaging package, you will have to do a firmware update of your TRIOS 6, starting from January 12, 2026. Follow the step-by-step instructions or watch the recording.

Step 1: Connect your TRIOS 6 scanner, a scanner update window will pop-up.

Step 2: Press “Update” to initiate the process. The firmware update will take a few minutes.
Optional: You can decide to postpone the update, but the reminder will reappear until the scanner has been updated.

Step 3: Read through changes, acknowledge you have read and understood them, and press “ok”.

Check the video below for better process understanding:

Your TRIOS 6 scanner is now updated and has access to hyperspectral technology. On the Scanner Management page, you will also see updated regulatory information.

A final pop-up window will show the first time you scan after the update. Acknowledge that you have understood the changes and exit the window. In case you only exit the window, the pop-up will reappear until you tick-off that you have understood the changes.

Troubleshooting and Recovery during update

Scenario Description Recommended Action
Error shows when update is at 100% Update runs to 100%, then both error and update pop-up appear Run the update again and close the error pop-up
Scanner disconnects during update TP-Link adapter or Wi-Fi connection drops mid-process Reconnect the scanner and restart Unite. The update will resume automatically.
Update fails verification The firmware file does not match the device model Restart the scanner and retry. If the issue persists, contact 3Shape Support.
Firmware version not updated Model number still showing #L1P-2 on the Scanner Management page. Check if multiple scanners are connected and confirm you selected the correct one.
Power loss during update Update interrupted unexpectedly Reconnect the power and repeat the firmware process. The system will recover safely.

Note: The firmware update can only be executed from Unite from the corresponding prompt. If you have problems or questions about updating the TRIOS 6 firmware, please contact 3Shape Support.

TRIOS 6 scanners purchased after January 12, 2026

Hyperspectral imaging is automatically included with your TRIOS 6 scanner. When you finish scanning and enter the Dx Plus software, you can visualize all oral health conditions (surface caries, tooth wear, gingival recession, plaque, and proximal caries).

Note: This only applies to EU and EEA markets. Rest of the world has hyperspectral imaging enabled from the start and once Dx Plus becomes available in these markets, you will be able to use historical scans to view proximal caries.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about hyperspectral imaging

What is hyperspectral imaging?
Hyperspectral imaging simultaneously combines white, fluorescent, and near-infrared light data in one scan, and as such generates a wealth of data enabling excellent treatment outcomes for your patients.

Why did I not have the hyperspectral imaging functionality for Dx Plus from the start?
The functionality was not approved for use in the EU & EEA until now.

Are there any increased risk of using the scanner with infrared light? Is it safe for patients, including children and pregnant women?
The device is safe for use on patients and by dentists, with no increased risk. All light sources have been tested, and the infrared light—emitted from a small, low-power source—does not pose additional risk. For details, refer to the updated Light Source Specification in Section 11 of the Safety and Setup Guide.

What does hyperspectral imaging use as opposed to before?
In addition to white and fluorescence light, it uses infrared light to capture information not visible with other light sources. For example you can use it for detecting proximal caries with Dx Plus.

Is hyperspectral imaging functionality available for all TRIOS models?
No, it is only available for TRIOS 6.

Do I need additional hardware or accessories for hyperspectral imaging?
No, you only need to update your TRIOS 6 scanner in EU & EEA, the rest of the markets have it automatically available. To view proximal caries visualization, a Dx Plus subscription is needed.

How do I activate hyperspectral imaging? How do I know hyperspectral imaging is active?
Hyperspectral imaging is available on all TRIOS 6 scanners following the update. If the Scanner Management Page shows #L1P-2 model, then your scanner has been automatically updated.

Does hyperspectral imaging require specific lighting conditions or scanning technique?
No, you can use the same lighting and scanning technique as normally.

Are there any training material available for how to scan with hyperspectral imaging?
We are introducing a new occlusal oral health images functionality in TRIOS scanning software. This enhancement provides you with clear guidance on capturing high-quality hyperspectral scans, ensuring you achieve a clear and complete visualization of each tooth from an occlusal perspective. It is enabled by default in the Check-up workflow, and you can enable it in any other workflow from the scan settings page. So, when you stop scanning you will receive feedback on missing occlusal oral health images.

Questions about update process and impact

How can I update my scanner to enable hyperspectral imaging and proximal caries in Dx Plus?
You will update your scanner with the scanner firmware update described in the “TRIOS 6 scanners purchased before January 12, 2026” chapter. Simply follow the on-screen steps during the update. To view proximal caries in Dx Plus, you need a Dx Plus subscription.

How long does the update take?
Update takes a few minutes.

What version of the software supports hyperspectral imaging?
TRIOS Software 1.18.9.10 or newer.

I received the pop-up to perform the update, why should I do it?
The update will ensure your scanner is up-to-date and that it captures hyperspectral data for proximal caries in Dx Plus. The pop-up will re-appear until your scanner is updated.

What happens to my TRIOS 6 scanner if I don't accept the update or close the software?
The update pop-up window will reappear until the scanner is updated. Scans taken before updating can't be used for proximal caries detection in Dx Plus.

Where do I get more information about what has changed?
An Amendment document explaining the changes can be found alongside in TRIOS Software by the Safety Guide located in About menu -> Documentation -> Safety Guides.

Will the update affect scan speed or image quality?
No. It only adds additional data.

Will the update affect scanner warranty?
No.

Will the update affect temperature or power consumption of the scanner?
No.

Questions about Dx Plus and proximal caries

Is Dx Plus required to view the scans with hyperspectral imaging?
Yes, there is currently no other software that can visualize proximal caries.

Why is proximal caries not showing in Dx Plus when I use TRIOS 6 scan (#L1P-2B model)?
Your scanner is not updated. Please update your scanner and the functionality will be available on new scans.

Questions about labeling

Can you please explain more about labeling of my TRIOS 6 scanner?
Once you update your scanner, you will be able to see the following changes in the Scanner Management Page:

  • Model number is changed from #L1P-2B to #L1P-2
  • CE Marking now includes the Notified Body identification number 2797, as required for TRIOS 6 devices with hyperspectral imaging technology
  • Unique Device Identifier (UDI-DI) changed
  • Serial number of the scanner remains the same

Why is my scanner identified as #L1P-2B in the Scanner Management Page, even though I bought it after January 12, 2026?
The scanner was produced before January 12, 2026. Please perform the scanner firmware update.

How do I know if I have #L1P-2B or #L1P-2 model scanner?
You can view this information in the Scanner Management Page.

Will I receive an updated Instructions for use, such as Safety and Setup Guide?
The changes are minor and detailed in the Amendment Document. Printed Safety and Setup Guide can be ordered through 3Shape Support as usual.
