Windows 10 end-of-life - what it means for 3Shape systems
19/04/2024Microsoft will officially stop supporting the Windows 10 operating system on October 14, 2025.
In the following article, you can learn which 3Shape products are affected, what the Windows 10 end of support means for those systems, and what options are available to you.
What does this mean for my 3Shape system running Windows 10?
Your 3Shape TRIOS system running on Windows 10 will continue to work as usual after the Windows 10 end-of-support date, with full scanning functionality. 3Shape will continue to provide software updates and support for your system.
Does the Windows 10 End-of-Support apply to all TRIOS MOVE+ systems?
No, not all TRIOS MOVE+ units will be affected by this. There are two versions of the MOVE+ system:
- First generation MOVE+ systems: Run on Windows 10 and are affected by Windows 10 End of Support. Shipment of these units started in April 2019.
- Second generation MOVE+ systems: Run already on Windows 11 and are not affected. Shipment of these units started in September 2023.
To verify which version you have, please check the serial number located on the label on the back of the MOVE+ screen, as shown in the following photo:

- Upgrade to Windows 11: Upgrade your MOVE+ system to Windows 11 by following the steps described in this Help Center article.

What happens if I decide to stay on TRIOS MOVE+ running Windows 10?
If you choose to continue using TRIOS MOVE+ with Windows 10:
- Your TRIOS MOVE+ will keep working with full scanning functionality as you know it today
- 3Shape will continue releasing software updates including latest features and improvements
- 3Shape remote support, repairs and replacements will remain available until October 2028
- If you are on a TRIOS Care, CliniCare or Basic Care plan, you will still get full support coverage
- Microsoft Defender Antivirus, preinstalled on the system, will remain active and still be updated by Microsoft until October 2028
- The latest released Microsoft Windows 10 patches will remain available
- Further updates to Windows 10, including new features and security improvements, will no longer be released by Microsoft
How is my 3Shape data protected if I stay on Windows 10?
MOVE+ is a closed medical device system used exclusively for scanning. If you're using the latest version of 3Shape Unite (24.1 and above), you can store your data locally and in the cloud. With 3Shape Unite version 24.1 or later, all data (including scans, patient names, images, and files) is automatically encrypted as soon as it is generated. Access to this encrypted data is only possible through the user’s 3Shape Account, which provides separate access to the decryption keys. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that users keep their 3Shape Account credentials and password confidential and never share them.
If you’re using an earlier version of 3Shape Unite, your data is only stored on your local device, where all data is protected and encrypted, following our previous-generation security model. Due to this we always recommend to upgrade to the latest version of Unite, as it offers the highest level of security and newest features.
If you want to know more about general Windows 10 security, please refer to the last question about Microsoft Defender.
What is the Windows 11 upgrade process?
If you choose to upgrade, you should follow the steps described in this Help Center article.
If you experience any issues or need help with the upgrade, you can contact your support team for remote assistance. The support team will handle the process free of charge, provided one of the following conditions is met:
- You are on a TRIOS Care / CliniCare / Basic Care plan and purchased your MOVE+ after October 2020.
- You are on a TRIOS Only plan and purchased your MOVE+ after October 2022.
For all other scenarios, standard service fees will apply.
Support will be available to help you with this upgrade starting from September 1st, 2025.
To qualify for the Windows 11 upgrade option, your system must be running 3Shape Unite version 24.1 (1.8.x.x) or higher. This requirement is in place to ensure a smoother, faster, and more reliable experience. By upgrading to Unite 24.1 first, you can store your data securely in the cloud, which helps streamline the transition to Windows 11. Special conditions may apply to DSOs.
What promotional offers are available for my TRIOS MOVE+ system?
If you're currently using a MOVE+ device running on Windows 10, we’re offering two time-limited upgrade options:
- Standalone Trade-Up Offer: upgrade your affected MOVE+ to the new MOVE+ (Standalone) running on Windows 11, at a discounted price.
- Full System Trade-up Offer: upgrade your complete system to TRIOS 6 and MOVE Pro at a discounted rate and step up to our most advanced solution.
To learn more or take advantage of these offers, please contact your 3Shape reseller.
To qualify for the trade-up offers, your system must be running 3Shape Unite version 24.1 (1.8.x.x) or higher, as shown in the following photo. This requirement is in place to ensure a smoother, and more reliable experience, as upgrading to Unite 24.1 first ensures that all user data is securely stored in the cloud. Special conditions may apply to DSOs.

My current MOVE+ system is still on Unite 23.1 or older. How can I safely transfer my data?
To safely transfer your data, we recommend the following flow:
- Update your old MOVE+ system to Unite 24.1. If, when checking for updates in Unite Store, nothing is offered to you, please contact your support team for remote assistance and provide them with your dongle and 3Shape Company Account, so that we can ensure that Unite 24.1 has been made available to you. Please indicate that you have a new MOVE+ system to ensure you get the right version of Unite.
- Once the update on the old MOVE+ system has finished, data and dongle licenses from that system will move into the cloud of your 3Shape Company Account.
- Unbox your new MOVE+ or MOVE Pro system and start up Unite 24.1.
- Log in with your 3Shape Company Account that was used on your old MOVE+, accept Terms & Conditions (if asked), and create a PIN code.
- The system might check for Unite updates and install them. You can now start using your new MOVE+/MOVE Pro system.
- Original MOVE+ system must be disposed of according to local requirements for disposal of electronic waste. It can also be returned to 3Shape at the customer’s own cost.
Will I be notified in the 3Shape software that Windows 10 is no longer supported?
Yes. If you are using a 3Shape system running Windows 10, you will see a warning message in the Unite Store indicating that the Windows 10 operating system is no longer supported. This notification will be implemented starting from Unite 25.1 version (1.8.12.x) and onwards.
Will my TRIOS Care / CliniCare / Basic Care support be affected?
If you are on a TRIOS Care, CliniCare or Basic Care plan, you will continue to receive full support coverage including software updates and remote hardware support, whether you stay on Windows 10, upgrade to Windows 11 or trade up your device/system.
Can TRIOS MOVE or TRIOS 3 Carts be upgraded to Windows 11?
No, these devices are not eligible to a Windows 11 upgrade.
Can TRIOS laptops sold by 3Shape reseller in the PC Support Program be upgraded to Windows 11?
Yes, all TRIOS laptops shipped by 3Shape since the start of the PC Support Program in August 2021 are eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade free of charge. All current TRIOS laptops listed in the PC Catalog (version 25.x) already run Windows 11.
What if I have a TRIOS Pod system with a 3Shape PC from before our PC Support Program (pre-2021) or a self-sourced laptop?
Self-sourced laptops as well as laptops sold outside the 3Shape PC Support Program may not meet the requirements for Windows 11. Since they fall outside the warranty and support program, here’s what you should do:
- Run the PC Health Check app to see if your Windows 10 system is eligible for an upgrade. You can follow the steps on the official Microsoft page.
- If your device isn’t eligible, you can enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program which is available for laptops running Windows 10 Pro or Home. Please follow the steps on the official Microsoft page.
What is Microsoft Defender and how will it be updated?
Microsoft Defender is the built-in malware and virus protection for your Windows 10 device. It’s enabled by default on TRIOS MOVE+ devices running Windows 10 and automatically downloads daily updates. This will continue until October 2028.
What does Microsoft Defender cover on my MOVE+ after October 14th, 2025?
