How to improve scan quality when scanning with a 3Shape lab scanner
07/11/2023Enhancing 3Shape Lab Scanner scan quality
In some cases, when scanning with a 3Shape lab scanner, the quality of the scan may be insufficient. This might cause issues later on in the design process.
The most obvious signs of insufficient scanning quality are the following:
- The scan may look distorted/layered
- There may be holes in the scans
- Tarts of the model are not scanned
Possible root causes may be:
- The Scanner hasn't been calibrated or wasn't calibrated correctly
- The object is not scannable or can't be scanned without the use of scan spray
- The PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements or is not updated correctly
- Hardware malfunction of the scanner
Instructions to improve the scan quality
- Make sure the PC meets the minimum software requirements (can be checked in software user manual), all the latest updates for the operating system and drivers are installed
- Calibrate the scanner using the provided calibration object(s)
- Check the calibration object for any visible defects
- Check for any loud or unusual noise from the scanner
- Ensure the scan object is centered on the scan interface plate (the smaller the object, the more it should be placed into the center of the plate)
- Ensure the object is well secured on the scan interface plate or in the scanning fixture, to avoid it moving/shaking during scanning
- Try scanning a different object
- All reflective (metal, glossy plastic) parts should be sprayed with scan spray. If the object has translucent parts or very contrasting colors, scan spray may also be required
- Make sure that the table where the scanner is located is stable and the scanner is in a stable position
- Check the rubber and the scanner door to make sure there is no light coming into the scanner. This step can be disregarded when scanning with an E-Scanner
Outcome
By checking and following the recommendations above you should be getting good-quality scan data.
